The Enkidu/Gilgamesh is a series of sculptures that relate to the ancient story of Gilgamesh and companion Enkidu. After reading several interpretations and translations of the Gilgamesh legend, one by Herbert Mason, A Verse Narrative, Gilgamesh became most significant. Mason wrote the story as a poem. It was very direct, an easy read and I became interested in turning the story and the characters into sculptures as Mason turned the story into a poem.
The works celebrate the concept of the good companion, the good friend. Each piece describes a certain moment in the tale that introduces the characters and significant aspect of their adventure. They further explore the idea of loyalty and commitment to a goal and the bonds formed in trials and adventures.
